Tiki mask (Fiji)

This Tiki mask is the best piece of the MisterMask collection and covers many decorative elements of tradtional Fijian culture. The 'Sali' (a traditional Fijian war club) can be find on the forehead as mirror image. Aside from cuting bone, these clubs were also used during tradtional dances. The hammer shaped 'Totokia' in the centre was often used as a weapon to peck a neat hole through skulls of enemy's during tribe wars. The weight of the bulky head in the centre point of the beak gave the needed forward force. The Kava bowl above the Totokia is used by Fijian natives for traditional Kava drinking ceremonies with the two leaves symbolising Kava's origin. A 'Tabua' - a whale's tooth (displayed on right cheek) is regarded as a sacred bond between two parties. The turtle on the forehead and left cheeck displays one of the most important traditional Fijian symbols. Turtles are revered in island legends as symbols of wisdom and blessing. The decorative 'Masi' style patterns are the finishing touch of this impressive Tiki mask.
